The ‘Hot’ Color in Smoothies is GREEN
If you’re like a lot of people, ‘green’ isn’t the first color you think of when you think of smoothies. That’s because for the second half of the 20th Century, a smoothie meant a sweet blended beverage made with fruit, fruit juice, ice, milk, and sugar. Theoretically, these smoothies made for a healthy breakfast or a healthy snack. In reality, commercial smoothies packed a lot more calories and fat than nutrition. Here are a few of examples of the nutritional content in drinks offered by popular smoothie chains:
- Jamba Juice’s Peanut Butter Mood - 840 calories, 21g fat, and 4.5g saturated fat.
- Smoothie King’s Pina Colada Island - 550 calories, 11g fat, and 9g saturated fat.
- Tropical Smoothie Cafe’s Healthy Woman Power Smoothie - 504 calories and 2g fat
Smoothies Get a Makeover
Fortunately smoothies have undergone a radical transformation -- in flavor, nutrition, and even simplicity of preparation. And the ‘hot’ color for smoothies in the new millenium is green!
A Green Smoothie is a much simpler and healthier drink than what you may be used to. And they’re more delicious than you might imagine. Green Smoothies are made by blending fresh fruits, leafy greens, and water. Not too bitter and not too sweet, green smoothies are fresh, creamy, delicious, and super-nutritious. Here’s why...
Calorie for calorie, dark, green leafy vegetables are perhaps the most concentrated source of nutrition of any natural food. They are a rich source of iron, calcium, potassium, and magnesium, as well as vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. They also provide a variety of phytonutrients such as beta-carotene. Dark green leaves even contain small amounts of Omega-3 fats.
But wait, there’s more...
With a ratio of fruits to veggies at about 60:40, the fruit taste dominates the flavor of the smoothie. But what’s really surprising is how the green vegetables actually complement the taste of the fruit, balancing out the sweetness and adding nice zest to the flavor.
My Apple Banana Green Smoothie is a perfect example.
The sweet-tart flavor of apples is a beautiful accompaniment to the earthy ‘green’ taste notes provided by the spinach, chard, kale and/or collards that provide the extra nutrition. You can use whatever apple variety you like best: Macintosh, Red Delicious, Gala, etc.
Granny Smith apples are great for eating, but personally I find them a little too tart for this smoothie. But it’s all a matter of personal taste.
The creamy banana in this smoothie recipe brings it all together, giving the drink a texture that is so rich and luxurious, you’d swear it was made with milk or cream.
The recipe is simplicity itself. Just chop and blend. You don’t even have to peel the apples. (There’s lots of flavor and nutrition in the skin!) What could be easier?
