Bottoms Up (Not Out) – Raw Food Breakfast Drinks

I admit it:  I like to drink.  Especially when I can drink a raw juice or smoothie that’s delicious and full of healthy, natural ingredients that make me feel good. 

Raw in the Morning

A typical breakfast for a lot of people consists of cereal and milk.  That sounds pretty good, but is it?  Unfortunately, the processed flour in the cereal and the fat in the dairy (or the lactose for lactose-intolerant people) can weigh a person down. 

A light morning meal based on raw fruits and green leafy vegetables does just the opposite. These foods are perfect for breakfast. They’re high in nutrients, yet low in calories and easy to digest. Juices and smoothies made with fruits and vegetables nourish you and fill you up, to help you feel energized and ready for the day ahead.

Some people can’t imagine getting by on nothing but juice first thing in the morning.  If you’re a hearty eater, you might want to consider pairing a Berry Smoothie with a bowl of Granola and Almond Milk

If you start juicing regularly and enjoy raw food fruit and vegetable smoothies for breakfast, a surprising thing can happen.  You may find that juice and/or fruit are all you need to satisfy you.

Raw Food Old and New

The raw food juice and raw food smoothie recipes in Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People include basics like Apple Juice and Carrot-Celery Juice which combines 2 carrots and 2 stalks of celery. 

These are the traditional juice drinks that health food bar-hoppers have enjoyed for years.  I like them, too, but I also like things that are new and different.  My taste for the ‘unknown’ is what inspired me to create contemporary raw food drink recipes such as my Pina Colada Smoothie with orange, pineapple, and fresh or frozen banana or the Goji Berry Smoothie which combines berries and banana with Goji berries.

Goji berries aren’t just for raw food fans.  They have been used for 6,000 years by herbalists in China, Tibet and India to boost immune function and improve circulation.  If you’ve never tried them, they have a Goji berries have a mild tangy taste that is slightly sweet and sour. I thnk they’re delicious in all kinds of raw food dishes.

Going Green with Raw Food Juice Recipes

Juicing is a wonderful way to start your day...especially if you choose a green leafy vegetable juice like my aptly titled raw food recipe for Green Juice.  This juice is a nutritional powerhouse that provides vitamins, calcium and trace minerals.  AND, it’s low in calories and sugar, which makes it a satisfying and effective drink for weight loss. 

Here’s all you need to become a Raw Food Juicer in the morning (or afternoon or evening):

  • 3 celery stalks
  • 3 kale or collard leaves
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced lengthwise
  • 1/3 bunch (about 1 oz.) parsley (you may substitute cilantro if you prefer the taste)
  • 1/4 peeled lemon

You will need an actual juicer to extract all the veggie goodness from the ingredients in this particular raw food drink, but many of the juice recipes in Raw Food Made Easy for 1 or 2 People require nothing more than a citrus juicer or reamer.

If you want it a little bit sweeter, you could always add an apple. It tastes like lemonade. Want to spice it up a little?  Add a 1/4-inch piece of fresh ginger to the mix.

When I have Green Juice in the morning, I know I’ve started my day out with a big bowl of healthy raw vegetables...more green leafy vegetables than I could ever eat in a salad.  (And, to be honest, I don’t generally eat salad for breakfast!) 

By the time you juice them, you’ve got all those vegetables are concentrated into a glass and it’s just a really easy quick meal that you can drink in 5 minutes. Yes, it is true that you don’t have the fiber in there but you get so much fiber on raw food diet anyway, that taking it out of one dish isn’t going to matter.

Plus, taking out the fiber makes it completely easy to digest, this is as easy to digest as water, and you get in all those vitamins and minerals that are so good for you.

This is a wonderful breakfast, it is so nutritious, and it actually is satisfying even though it’s so light—you’ll feel great after drinking this juice. Whenever I have the time, I always make this juice for breakfast.

Jenny or anybody who eats raw.

What do you do with the leftover pulp from vegetables and fruits that you juice?

Would these drinks be better with the fiber left in? Most of us don’t get enough fiber. I’m gluten intolerant and there is not much fiber in the gluten foods unless I have more raw items.

Do you use any of the pith that is in citrus fruits in your drinks?

I have a very good blender. How will the juices taste if I just blend everything together? I know the texture will be different.

Are there any foods that should be cooked to a certain temperature to unbind some of its nutrients?

I appreciate help from all to get me started on more raw foods in my diet.

Hi Linda,
Unfortunately green juice pulp is pretty icky tasting! (Also, it doesn’t have many nutrients left—those are all in the juice).

I thought because it was all the fiber that was left it would be good to add to baked goods in some way. I will just keep adding it to my compost pile. A at least it will still have a purpose.
